Since the Snapdragon 855 Plus comes with the support of 5G network via the external Snapdragon X50 modem, many chip manufacturers are speeding up developing the 5G chips. As we can see, four major chip makers gradually released their latest 5G SoC, we are talking about the Snapdragon 865, Kirin 990 5G, Exynos 990 (Exynos 9830) and MediaTek Dimensity 1000 (MT6889). But what features does each processor offer us? Which one is the best 5G chip? Let’s make a detailed comparison.

CPU performance

All the four processors adopt octa-core based on Arm Cortex architecture and they are both created using 7nm manufacturing process. However, they have different forms.

The Snapdragon 865 adopts 1x3x4 design:

● 1xCortex A77 @2.84GHz

● 3xCortex A77 @2.42GHz    

● 4x Cortex A55 @1.8GHz

The Huawei Kirin 990 5G uses 2x2x4 design:

● 2 x Cortex-A76 @2.86GHz

● 2x Cortex-A76 @2.36GHz

● 4x Cortex-A55 @1.95GHz   

The Samsung Exynos 990 adopts 2x2x4 design:

● 2x Exynos M5

● 2x Cortex A76

● 4x Cortex A55

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 adopts 4x4 design:

● 4x Cortex A77 @ 2.6GHz  

● 4x Cortex A55 @ 2.0GHz

Through comparison, we can see that the Snapdragon 865 and MediaTek Dimensity 1000 employ the more advanced Cortex A77 cores, while the Huawei Kirin 990 5G and Samsung Exynos 990 still adopts the older Cortex A76 cores. Compared to the Cortex A76, the Cortex A77 offers much better performance, just as the performance test below.

In addition, the Cortex A77 on the Snapdragon 865 offers higher maximum clock speed than the MediaTek Dimensity 1000.

GPU performance

The Snapdragon 865 adopts the latest Adreno 650 GPU. According to the official introduction, the Adreno 650 offers a 25% increase in performance and 35% more power efficient than the Adreno 640. In Addition, the Adreno 640 adds many other features like the selection of Elite Gaming experience, which will offer ultra smooth gaming and high HDR quality. And it also supports 144Hz display.

The Exynos 990 and MediaTek Dimensity 1000 adopts ARM Mali-G77 GPU. Like the Elite Gaming experience on the Adreno 640, the ARM Mali-G77 also offers HyperEngine 2.0 feature, which can reduce the latency and provide smooth gameplay experience. In addition, it supports up to 120Hz screen refresh rate.

Presently, we cannot tell you which GPU is better, as we still need to know how about their performance in real-life tests.

While the Huawei Kirin 990 still uses the old Mali-G76 GPU, but in order to remain competitive, the core count of the Mali-G76 on the Kirin 990 has been increased from 10 cores to 16 cores. But we still need to see if this strategy works well for improving the GPU performance.   

AI performance

Nowadays, the AI performance has become very important for smartphones. The Snapdragon 865 touts a fifth-generation AI Engine Hexagon 698, which improve the AI processing ability from 7TOPs on Snapdragon 855 to 15 TOPs.

AI performance  

The Huawei Kirin 990 5G processor adopts 2 + 1 Da Vinci three-core NPUs. Huawei claims that it has a 1.88x improvement over the Kirin 980’s NPU design, and a 24x boost to power efficiency for tasks like face unlock.

The Samsung Exynos 990 adopts dual-core NPU, which can deliver 10TOPs of performance according to the official introduction.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 adopts its own third generation APU 3.0 neural processing unit and they claim that it offers double performance than the previous generation.   

MediaTek Dimensity 1000 

According to the latest Zurich benchmark test (an authoritative AI performance test), the MediaTek 5G SoC (MediaTek Dimensity 1000) tops the AI performance ranking list with the scores of 56,158 points. While the Kirin 990 5G lags behind the Dimensity 1000 by 3755 points. However, the Snapdragon 865 and Samsung Exynos 990 hasn’t been tested on the list, so we still need to wait for the benchmark test update.

Both the Snapdragon 865 and Exynos 990 support the latest LPDDR5 memory standard, which can run up to 2750MHz, while the Kirin 990 5G and MediaTek Dimensity 1000 still support the old LPDDR4x.

5G connectivity

All the four processors support 5G network. We are glad to see that both Huawei Kirin 990 and MediaTek Dimensity 1000 are equipped with an integrated 5G modem. The Huawei Kirin 990 is equipped with an integrated Balong 5G modem, which supports up to 2.3 Gbps downlink speed and 1.25 Gbps uplink speed. While the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 supports up to 4.6Gbps downlink speed and 2.5Gbps uplink speed. So the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 offers higher downlink and uplink speed than the Kirin 990.

5G connectivity 

The Snapdragon 865 and Exynos 990 are equipped with an external 5G modem. The Snapdragon 865 is equipped with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem, which can achieve 7.5Gbps downlink speed and 3Gbps uplink speed. While the Exynos 990 is equipped with Exynos 5123 modem, which supports 7.35 Gbps downlink speed.

Judging from their specs, the Snapdragon 865 offers the highest downlink and uplink speed. However, the external 5G modem is not a satisfying solution. As compared to the external 5G modem, the integrated 5G modem performs much better in power efficiency.


The Snapdragon 865 with its new ISP Spectra 480 supports 200MP cameras and it also supports 8K/30fps video, 4K/120fps, 4K HDR video and unlimited 960fps video at 720P.

The Kirin 990 5G processor only supports 64MP camera and 4K/60fps video recording.

The Samsung Exynos 990 supports 108Mp single camera and 24.8MP+24.8MP dual cameras and also supports 4K/120fps video.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 supports 80MP single camera and 32MP + 16MP dual cameras.

Therefore, through comparison, we can find that the Snapdragon 865 and Samsung Exynos 990 have more advantages in the camera than the Kirin 990 5G and MediaTek Dimensity 1000.         

AnTuTu and Geekbench benchmark scores

Presently, there is not an official benchmark scores under the same test platform. We only know that the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 scores 511,363 total points under AuTuTu benchmark test. The Snapdragon 865 scores 4303 points in single-core and 13344 points in multi-core under Geekbench test. The Huawei Kirin 990 5G scores 3,842 points in single-core and 11,644 points in multi-core under Geekbench test.

As they are tested in the different benchmark versions, so we cannot directly compare their benchmark scores. But according the their specs, we expect that the latest Snapdragon 865 and MediaTek Dimensity 1000 will score higher points than another two processors.
