PS5 vs Xbox Scarlett: performance and graphics

Both consoles will be equipped with an SSD, one of the major new features of this generation. This storage technology, which will also act as virtual RAM, promises to revolutionize the gaming experience with reduced loading times, much faster texture display and increased fluidity. In terms of RAM, the next Xbox will be based on the GDDR6 standard.

Both the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett will run on an AMD Ryzen Zen 2 custom CPU, as well as an AMD Navi GPU, customized for each device's needs. At this stage, without further details, it is impossible to say which one will prevail over the other. Sony and Microsoft each announce 8K, 4K compatibility at 60 fps and up to a maximum of 120 fps. Of course, this is theoretical potential under optimal conditions. In practice, it will be very rare to achieve such levels of performance. Also noteworthy for both consoles is the presence of ray-tracing, this technology that takes the quality of light reflection in the environment to the ultimate stage.

PS5 vs Xbox Scarlett: accessories

Sony is the most talkative on this subject. Some features of the DualShock 5 controllers have already been unveiled. They will be equipped with a larger battery and a USB-C charging port. Dynamic triggers (R2 and L2) will allow you to choose the dosage of certain actions in play, such as archery for example. Applications can also be imagined for QTE sequences. Finally, the Japanese manufacturer has opted for haptic technology, which will replace the traditional vibration motors, for a more advanced immersion. A feature already found on the Joy-Con Switch and Steam Controller. We have no information on the Xbox controller(s) at this time.

For the rest, it is very likely that the PS5 is entitled to a PS VR 2 according to several patents filed by Sony. However, it will probably not be available as soon as the console is released, but a little later. But what is certain is that the previous PS VR equipment will be compatible with PlayStation 5. For virtual reality enthusiasts, there is no picture: it will be better to invest in a PS5 than in an Xbox Scarlett.

PS5 vs Xbox Scarlett: online service

Nothing has been confirmed on this subject at this time. We can expect that there will be few changes on the online with the renewal of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold subscriptions. Sony has announced changes for the PlayStation Now, which will become more interesting. This was necessary to compete with a likely offer that included the Xbox Game Pass and xCloud, Microsoft's cloud gaming platform. But on this point, the Xbox Scarlett still seems to start with a good lead over its rival.

Otherwise, both consoles will remain multimedia boxes for streaming video content. Interface changes are expected, but it is still far too early to know how much they will be disrupted.

PS5 vs Xbox Scarlett: compatibility

Sony announced in April 2019 that the PS5 will be backward compatible with PS4 games. But this October, this feature seems to have been partially challenged. "The development team is currently checking to see if full compatibility can be ensured," explains the manufacturer. A vague message that does not have anything to make you optimistic.

For its part, Microsoft has announced that the Scarlett will support the backwards compatibility of thousands of original Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Xbox games. The Redmond firm added that it will not switch to 100% dematerialized: the console will be well equipped with a Blu-Ray player to enjoy its physical titles. This will also be the case for the PS5.

PS5 vs Xbox Scarlett: games catalogue

At the time of writing, only one game has been made official: Halo Infinite on Xbox Scarlett. At launch, as always, the choice of securities will be limited. We should have some exclusivities on each side (a new Uncharted at Sony?) as well as games available on both platforms. Leaks suggest that an Assassin's Creed may be taking place during the Viking period, for example. The eagerly awaited Beyond Good & Evil 2 will also be on board, but not necessarily as soon as the consoles are released.

Of course, we will also have the trans-gen games, released on PS4 and One and which will be adapted to their successors. Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us : Part 2 will most likely be offered on PS4. Cyberpunk 2077 should also arrive on the next gen.

PS5 vs Xbox Scarlett: price and release date

Sony officially announced in a press release, which also confirms the trade name of PlayStation 5, that the console will be available in late 2020, around the Christmas holidays. Microsoft has unveiled the same exit window, but remains discreet on the final name of the product. The PS5 and Xbox Scarlett should therefore be launched almost simultaneously, probably towards the end of November based on the strategies used by both manufacturers over previous generations.

As far as prices are concerned, we will be notified by the brands at the last minute. Unlike Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft agree not to make money from selling consoles, which they market at low prices in order to impose their ecosystem on a large number of users. It is then on the services (games, PlayStation Plus subscriptions, PS Now, Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass...) that they get paid. There is no reason why the tactics should be different in 2020: the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett will offer a performance/price ratio that is necessarily attractive compared to a PC. We can expect a price around 499 euros given the announced characteristics.

To form a firm opinion, we will of course have to wait for the last details on the two consoles and, even better, the tests. But we can already foresee that the PS5 will stand out on the RV side and certainly on the exclusive features as well. For its part, the Xbox Scarlett should use its very interesting services such as the Game Pass to convince consumers. So, which one's giving you the eye?
