The development process of gimbal camera

We know that the original definition of the term gimbal camera was the installation and fixation of the camera supporting equipment. Prior to the rise of aerial photography, the gimbal was mainly used as a mechanical component for direct connection between tripod and SLR camera. It was mainly used to fix the camera so that it could adjust multiple angles (usually three axes) in space.
In order to meet the needs of aerial photography, most of the fixed-wing military aircraft are fixed aerial photography platforms, which shoot vertically towards the ground without motion compensation and other devices to maintain the stability of the picture.
Before the advent of consumer UAVs, most of the platforms used by UAVs were fixed platforms. For products like Phantom of DJI, fixed design was adopted to fix the cameras and aircraft together. By adjusting the angle of the aircraft, the perspective of aerial photography was changed.
In the security field, the monitoring camera head is usually the electric cradle head, which is similar to the fixed cradle head, except that the rotary axis of the cradle head is equipped with motor, and the cradle head can receive remote control signals, so as to adjust the direction of the camera or scan the surveillance area.
As motion photography and aerial photography gradually developed, gimbal camera was given a new definition and requirements. When the camera is moving, one of the difficulties that the head needs to solve is to keep the picture stable and eliminate low-frequency jitter. At this time, the fixed cradle head can no longer meet the demand, and the electric cradle head for stability has come into being. It can also be called stable cradle head.
The principle of stabilizing the cradle head is to make the motor of each axis produce appropriate reverse torsion, so as to offset the movement of the platform in a certain direction.
Taking the popular brushless motor holder as an example, the attitude sensor is usually used to read the posture through the IMU at the bottom of the cradle head, or directly compare with the attitude angle of the master control sensor of the cradle head to get the Angle that needs to be corrected for each axis, and then output the PWM signal to make the brushless motor make the correction action quickly, so as to keep the camera level at all times.
Different from the original one that fixed the cradle head directly on the aircraft but could not give consideration to the picture stability, the application of two-axis and three-axis stabilization of the cradle head makes it possible to achieve the stabilization of the airborne cradle head.
Generally, there are 2-axis platform and 3-axis platform, and 3-axis platform has stable compensation in the three directions of horizontal, pitching and roll. 2-axis platform has poor stability enhancement effect due to the lack of stability compensation in the yaw axis direction. It is mainly used for low-end unmanned aerial vehicles (the Zen thought h3-2d on the earliest DJI spirit is 2-axis platform).
After the development of the cradle head to the electric cradle head, it has basically determined a big application trend -- increasing stability, and then more is the development of different application scenarios.
Integral gimbal camera
With the expansion of the market, some users have higher requirements on usability, and "packaged" integrated products begin to enter the market. At present, there are many products on the market, such as Hover Camera and DJI phantom 4, etc., which are integrated in the form of gimbal, camera and body, which are undoubtedly more convenient for non-professional aerial photography users.
At the same time, handheld cloud head products also began to rise. As the hand-held cloud head is closer to the actual needs of most people, a convenient and easy to use integrated scheme is undoubtedly a key direction of the development of hand-held cloud head.
Not long ago, cloud camera integration could be a user-especially for users who are not very keen on DIY-that expect to achieve. But after integration, because of the change of actual demand, the camera is difficult to be replaced. For example, in order to meet the actual needs, the handheld camera began to have a free mounted camera.
